Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund

Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund is book four in A Shanahan Match, and can be read as a stand-alone.  Zaira is the middle child of the Shanahan family and is good at fading into the background which is very helpful when you are trying to be a published female author in 1849.  She stops being unnoticed when some “research kissing” with the local matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna, sets them both on the path to a fake match.  But sometimes fake becomes real.

This was a swoon worthy romance that I adored.  Zaira and Bellamy were such loveable characters who had fantastic chemistry, banter, and romantic tension.  I appreciated the themes of being honest with yourself, being honest with others, and accepting who you were created to be.  It was a pleasure to learn about St. Louis, Missouri in 1849 and have a greater understanding of the Irish immigrant culture.  The Shanahan and McKenna families were fantastic to visit with and I will miss hanging out at the McKenna’s pub.

Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund is a wonderful story filled with great romance, a fascinating setting, and beautiful themes.  I have adored this series and this was the perfect ending.  I highly recommend Marrying the Matchmaker and this will be a 2026 favorite for me.

Eleonora shifted on something hard and moaned. Her throat hurt. Her head hurt. Even

her eyes hurt. And her body, why was it so heavy and tingly?

“Mummy.” Her throat scratched and barely a whisper came out. The aching whine that

usually brought Mum running to her side did nothing.

Behind her, someone rattled about like they were working with a stove, and the distinct

smell of burned food tainted the air. Oh no. Mum must be cooking, which meant Father

was gone or sick too.

Eleonora moaned extra loud as she rolled toward the sound. Acting wasn’t only for the

stage, although she really did feel bad . . . just maybe not bad enough for the volume

she forced. She blinked against the yellow lantern light that peeked through the gaps in

the loose hair over her eyes. Scuffed black shoes turned from the iron feet of the stove

and into a glob of something thick and wet. Ewww. She was lying on a filthy floor, not a

hard bed. And those were a stranger’s shoes, not Mum’s or Father’s. Father kept his

polished and clean. The man pressed his glob-covered foot against her shoulder,

forcing her to roll back and look up at him. The fake beard was gone now, but there was

no mistaking that devil smile. He was real, not a bad dream she’d left behind.

“Good. You’re not dead. At least not yet.” He dug his fingers into her arm and dragged

her toward the other side of the room.

“Let me go!”

When he didn’t, she bit down on his dirty hand.

“Why you little—” He struck the side of her face, leaving behind a burning sting. “Stop

that, and no crying or I’ll kill you before your mother gets here.”

She quit fighting, but she couldn’t stop the tears as he dragged her along. Something

sharp stuck up from the uneven floor and scraped down her leg until it caught on her

hem. He yanked to break her free of the snag, and her shoulder screamed almost as

loud as she did. Finally, the fabric tore, and he swung her into a corner.

“Sit there and be quiet.” He squatted and coiled a strand of her loose hair around his

finger. “At least until I need you, then you can wail all you want. The more your mother

suffers, the happier I’ll be.”

Someone knocked on the door.

He dropped the strand and rose to his feet with a growl. As he crossed the room, he

grabbed a gun from the table. “Not a sound, or I’ll shoot you.”

Eleonora curled into a ball and wrapped her cloak around herself. What could she do

now? A gun meant he didn’t have to be near her to hurt her. Think. She bumped her

head against the wall. You have to think. A hairpin scraped against her scalp, and she

winced. Then blinked. If a hairpin could hurt her head, maybe she could use it as a

weapon if he came close again. Keeping her eye on the man’s back, she pulled the

painful pin free and hid it within the folds of her cloak. The door creaked, but when she

looked up, the man had only cracked it and blocked whoever it was from view. “I thought

we were meeting at the bridge.”

“Our plan’s ruined. They went to the police. She won’t be coming.” Anger burned in a

woman’s voice.

The man glanced at Eleonora. “What do you want me to do with her?”

“Make her suffer for Katherine’s insolence, but be quick about it. You haven’t much time.

Leave her body where it will be found. I want Katherine to know that her choices led to

her daughter’s tortured death. When it’s done, lie low until I contact you.”

But Katherine wasn’t her mum. Constanza Brisbane was. They’d taken the wrong

person.

The door shut, and he faced her, his cold glee freezing Eleonora to the spot.

“I never thought I’d be the sort of special wretch to torture and kill a child, but . . .” He

made a show of cracking his neck and then popping his knuckles, all the while moving

toward her.

Eleonora curled tighter into her corner, slipping the U-shape end of the two-prong

hairpin over the crook of her finger so it would be easier to jab. It wasn’t much, but it

was all she had.

He crouched before her. “You look so much like your mother, I’ll just pretend you’re her.”

Eleonora whimpered.

He smiled as he ran a hand through her hair again and twirled the end. “So many ways

to hurt you and so little time.”

If she didn’t do something, she’d never see Mum or Father again. But where could she

stab him with a hairpin that wouldn’t just make him mad? His shirt collar protected his

neck, but nothing protected his eyes. Eyes were soft . . .

She yanked the hairpin free of her cloak and aimed true. His howl rang in her ears, and

his hands flew to his eye.

Eleonora didn’t wait. She jumped to her feet, skirted around him, and ran for the door.

Ugly words filled the room.

“I’m going to kill you, you little—”

His voice followed her into the hall and downstairs to a narrow foyer. Bitter cold met her

as she stumbled into the dark night. The street was lined with tall buildings, but no one

traveled it or sat on the stoops smoking. What should she do? Mum always warned that

going out by herself was dangerous, but was it more dangerous than the man upstairs?

A thud sounded behind her, followed by more angry words. He must be coming for her

already. Better the dark street than the angry man who wanted to kill her.

She yanked up her skirts and ran. At the first street, she turned, then again when it

connected to a bigger one. Street after street, she turned until she smacked into a

police officer.

“Help! He’s trying to kill me.”

The thin man knelt down and took her by the arms. “Whoa now. What’s this? Who’s

after you?”

The words poured out between pants. “I’m Eleonora Brisbane. My parents are

Constanza and Marcellus Brisbane. Someone took me from them, and now he’s going

to kill me.”

“Brisbane? We’ve been looking for you. Come with me. We’ll get you back to your

parents.”

It was a long walk to the station, and the inside was full of people just as scary as the

man who’d taken her.

“Don’t worry about them. We’re heading to the chief’s office. You’ll be safe in there.”

He led her up a set of stairs, where it was quieter, and then into an office at the back.

When the officer introduced her to him, the chief pulled a peppermint stick from a jar on

his desk and offered it to her while he asked a bunch of questions. She wanted to

answer them, really she did, but she couldn’t think anymore. Now that she was safe, all

her body wanted to do was shake.

“It’s okay. You were a brave girl tonight. You can rest here until your parents arrive.”

Someone brought in a cot and a blanket so she could lie down, but how could they

expect her to sleep? The memory of that man chased her every time she closed her

eyes. But sleep must have come, for the next thing she knew, Mum and Father cradled

her between them, crying as hard as she. Once they settled, the chief asked Eleonora

again to share what happened, taking down her description of the kidnapper and asking

Mum if it matched the man she knew as Winston. Finally, they were allowed to go.

When they reached the hack, their trunks were packed and loaded. “Are we leaving for

the next city already?” Usually, they spent two weeks in a place, but it hadn’t even been

one yet.

Mum and Father exchanged looks.

Mum smoothed back Eleonora’s hair. “What do you say to living in a real house with a

room full of toys? You can go to school with other girls and make friends with children

your own…”

“You’re sending me away?” Eleonora couldn’t breathe. She’d always known the children

of other singers lived away from their parents, but she never thought she would.

Father gently took her face between his hands. “No, dear. We would never send you

away. We’re starting a new life together, in a new city with new names. You’ll finally

have a normal childhood.”

“But I like the opera and traveling.”

“I know, but this is better. You’ll see. You’ll never have to be afraid again.”

Charlie and Her Sweet Escape by Kaylee Baldwin

Charlie and Her Sweet Escape by Kaylee Baldwin is a wonderful romantic comedy and part of the Enchanted Forresters series, but can be read as a standalone novel. Charlie desperately wants to go on a wilderness reality show to earn money pay her mother's medical debt. The show only accepts couples which is great when you are getting married until you are not getting married and have to find another husband. Bennett Forrester has been friends with Charlie through his sister for a long time. He would love to help his business improve with the money he could earn on the show. The answer is to marry Charlie, help his business and then return to business as usual. This marriage of convenience may only be a problem if people fall in love. What are the chances?

I was all about Charlie and Bennett! This was a delightful story with engaging characters told in a dual POV. I appreciated the depth of the characters, the humor, and watching them fall in love with each other. The reality show survival setting allowed me as a reader to get to know the characters well as they literally tried to survive while spending time together. The wilderness setting was fascinating. Since my motto is better dead than camping the fact that I was so engaged, enjoyed learning survival skills, and momentarily wanted to go camping says quite a bit. It was great to visit with the Forrester family and others in the town of Winterhaven.

I was very invested in the story, characters, and setting of Charlie and Her Sweet Escape by Kaylee Baldwin. The book will simply make your day, and will be a 2026 favorite for me. I thrilled for Jude’s story and cannot wait for it to publish. I highly recommend!

On Kindle Unlimited.

Kaylee Baldwin’s love of all things books and reading led her to graduate from Arizona State University with a degree in English. She writes romantic comedies with tons of heart (and literary references, because she’s a book nerd in her soul.) She lives in Arizona with her family, and likes to travel, find gluten-free recipes that are actually delicious, and pretend she’s actually going to read all the books she buys.

Hearts on the Fly by Toni Shiloh

Hearts on the Fly: A Christian African American & Black Hockey Romance of Forbidden Love and Friends to More by Toni Shiloh
is a great sports romance novel.  Val’s friends set her up on a blind date on Valentine’s Day.  She reluctantly shows up and is shocked when it is Jabari Hall, her sister’s ex-boyfriend who the family will not even speak about.   Their story gets complicated when they realize they enjoy spending time together, Val becomes Jabari’s confident with his new diagnosis of deteriorating eyesight, and they start fall in love.

Jabari and Val were two great characters I enjoyed rooting for!  Val’s kind heart, sweet spirit, and beautiful faith made her so endearing.  Jabari matured, found faith, and was the kind of guy you wanted to buy his hockey jersey and root for!  This character driven story was told in dual POV, the characters had great banter and chemistry, and was filled with sweet romance.  I enjoyed learning more about hockey and the world of sports management.  The story was a win for me!

Hearts on the Fly by Toni Shiloh was a delightful novel with sweet romance, a wonderful faith integration, and the great setting of the hockey world.  The author did a marvelous job keeping the novel fun while exploring deeper family and personal issues.  I highly recommend Hearts on the Fly by Toni Shiloh.

Mail Order Baroness by Misty Beller

Mail Order Baroness by Misty Beller
is the second book in the Lords of Rockies series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel. James Balfour is the son of an English Duke living and working on a Montana Ranch. He has fond memories of his childhood friend, Rose.    Rose Prescott has had a rough time since leaving the ranch and has been forced by her step-father into singing in saloons.   She flees when she sees an ad for a housekeeper placed in the paper by James.  But, can James keep Rose safe from her complicated past?

I adored this book.  It had all the things I love: English aristocracy, a Montana ranch, frontier time period, charming characters, sweet romance, and subtle faith themes.  James and Rose were engaging characters who rekindled their childhood romance.  I was very drawn to Rose and wanted her to find loves with James and have a new beginning. James was a great hero whose tender heart, great work ethic, and charm was so endearing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mail Order Baroness by Misty Beller. I loved the redemptive theme of this character driven story.  This will be a favorite for me this year.  I cannot wait for book number three in the Lord of the Rockies series!  I highly recommend.

Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard: A Memoir by Ken Rideout

Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard: A Memoir by Ken Rideout is one of the best memoirs I have read this year. I sat down to page through the book and ended up reading all of the book after dinner one night. I was absolutely engrossed in the story.

Ken shares about the challenges of his early life, his addiction, his time as a Wall Street Trader, healing, and his amazing story of running and being the fastest 50+ runner in the world. For me at the heart of the story is a man who was willing to change and transform to not let his past define his future. I was very inspired by Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard by Ken Rideout and highly recommend. This will be a book I will not forget and a favorite of 2026!

I was gifted a copy and not required to write a positive review.

Ken Rideout is the fastest marathoner in the world over fifty and a former prison guard, Wall Street trader, and opioid addict. In addition to his many running victories, he has completed more than ten Ironman triathlons. In 2018, Ken founded capital solutions firm Camrock Advisors. More recently, he founded talent agency Rideout Sports and Entertainment.

Whispers at Painswick Court by Julie Klassen

Whispers at Painswick Court by Julie Klassen published by Bethany House is wonderful historical regency romance with mystery. Anne Loveday is the daughter of a surgeon and believes being single is her best option. To leave her stepmother and have a new adventure she accepts an invitation to Painswick to see an old friend, and agrees to become the nurse for, Lady Celia, who hurt her sister in the past. In residence at Painswick court is lady Celia’s daughter, two adult nephews, a new lady’s maid and two doctors who often stop by. This leaves you with many suspects who may be trying to kill Lady Cecilia.

This was a dreamy Regency novel with mystery, romance, and a lovely English Village setting. The author does an incredible job immersing you in time period as she gently explains the nuances of Regency England while you walk through the story. I was fascinated learning about medical practices of the time, village life, and. tried to solve the mystery along with Anne. I loved the themes of redemption, forgiveness and second chances which made for a satisfying read.

I was enchanted with the story and hoping for a happily ever after for Anne Loveday. I was not disappointed. The depth and beauty of the book makes this one you will not want to miss. I very highly recommend Whispers at Painswick Court by Julie Klassen. It will be a 2026 favorite for me.
