The Man I Never Met by Elle Cook

The Man I Never Met by Elle Cook is such an interesting read. Davey calls Hannah by accident while trying to reach someone else and they start a virtual friendship. Davey is coming from Texas to start a job in London where Hannah lives. The story asks the questions: Can you fall in love with someone you have never met?

I appreciated the depth of this story. It is definitely different from your typical romance or romantic comedy and is more women’s fiction with some romance. The author weaves themes into the story such as how do we love someone who is suffering, how do friends support you and help in finding love, and learning to love yourself before you love someone else? The characters were very likable and we got to hear from both Davey and Hannah in the story.

This is a different kind of story that I really loved. I enjoyed the meet cute, the depth, Hannah’s relationship with her family, and the friendships on both sides of the pond. I was glad I was able to discuss The Man I Never Met with someone else after reading. I highly recommend it.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

Landin in Trouble by Brittany Larsen

Landin’ in Trouble by Brittany Larsen is a sweet romantic comedy that is part of the Creekville Kisses series. It is a stand alone, but there are other characters from the series.  Landon is living at his Grandmother’s house after he was fired from his job at a law firm in Washington DC.  Brynn is a sweet complicated character who is working  on her life as she works at a daycare, as a yoga instructor and her friend Dizzy’s Goga camp for kids.  They have history with each other and the story goes back and forth in time with their history.

I very much enjoyed this story.  The author brought in the back story while you as the reader are learning the present in  alternating POVs.  I was very invested in Landon and Brynn’s relationship.  The story had many laugh out loud moments and Landon’s grandmother is probably one of my favorite secondary characters this year.  The author has a beautiful way of writing about the hard things of life with humor, compassion, and a growth mentality.  It is refreshing.

Landin’ in Trouble is a romantic comedy with heart!   The characters are beautifully flawed with depth making this a unique happily ever after.  I recommend the story.

TW: Eating Disorders.

Brittany Larsen loves stories and firmly believes every story is a love story. Or at least should be. She has published four Sweet RomComs, three contemporary retellings of Jane Austen novels, and one novella. Her most recent work is Dizzy in Love, a sweet romcom. Idaho will always be where she’s from, but she calls California home.

Forget Me Twice by Carina Taylor

Forget Me Twice by Carina Taylor is a sweet romantic comedy. Main character, Meyer, gets a phone call from the hospital that Archie, her husband, has been hurt and she needs to come get him. The only problem is that she and Archie are divorced, Archie lives somewhere else, and apparently Archie has amnesia.

This is a sweet and funny romance told from Meyer’s point of view. Archie and Meyer have great banter, chemistry and were very likable. I enjoyed watching them mature, grow in their relationship, and understanding their back story. The small town setting was very quaint and fun to visit. I enjoyed meeting so many interesting secondary characters who were very likable and added to the story.

Forget me Twice by Carina Taylor reminds us that being honest, willing to change, and remembering why you love someone is very valuable. I love a good redemptive story and this one was a delight. I highly recommend it.

Beneath His Silence by Hannah Linder

Beneath His Silence by Hannah Linder is her debut book, and it is fabulous! I confess I stayed up late to find out what happened, and I have no regrets! Our heroine, Ella Pemberton, disguises herself as a governess to enter the estate of her late sister’s husband to find out the truth about her death. Lord Sedgewick is a man who hates himself and most of the world around him, but he loves his son dearly.

This was a Regency story that delighted me! It has the mystery, the seaside, the troubled brooding hero, the lovely heroine, and a thoughtful redemptive story. The author weaves beautiful truths through the pages of the story and I was drawn in. The characters were well thought out and relatable, the seaside setting was lovely, and I enjoyed trying to guess the mystery. A satisfying read.

I enjoyed the themes of redemption, figuring out what matters to you, and remembering to look beyond the surface of people we know. This was well written and I look forward to seeing what the author publishes in the future. She is a wonderful voice to add to the faith based Regency romance world. I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Delete That (And Other Failed Attempts to Look Good Online) by John Crist

Thank you @PRHAudio for the complimentary audiobook!

Delete That (And Other Failed Attempts to Look Good Online) by John Crist is an autobiography of John’s life and he shares the trials he has walked through the last few years. I listened to the audio book which was read by the author, and found that it added greatly to my experience.

I have enjoyed John’s comedy and videos through the years. My son and I would watch his videos during my son’s chemotherapy treatments. We would laugh aloud and they would make my son’s day. The author shares very honestly how his family, faith, and homeschooling have shaped him. I appreciated the depth and honesty as he related his story and how he walked through the recovery process. He has a great way of sharing his struggles and encouraging you to be real with yourself, others, and God. I found the story very refreshing!

I enjoyed laughing, learning, and reflecting with the author on his journey. I found the story uplifting and encouraging and loved this wonderful real life redemption story! I highly recommend it.

Lucy by the Sea By Elizabeth Strout Read by Kimberly Farr.

Thank you @PRHAudio for the complimentary audiobook!

“It is a gift in this life that we do not know what awaits us.”

Lucy by the Sea by Pulitzer prize winning author Elizabeth Strout is a thoughtful and interesting story. It is the fourth book in the series, but I was able to listen and not feel like I was lost. We follow Lucy as she leaves New York City to reside in Maine with her divorced husband at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The story is told from Lucy’s perspective.

I found myself very engrossed in the story. It was interesting to walk through the pandemic again with someone who was seeing it unfold. Lucy is a contemplative character who has so much compassion for the people around her. She has had challenges in her life, and she has used them to become a better person. She is a writer by trade and I found her fascinating. I felt like I was sitting down with an old friend as they shared about their life with me.

“When you are truly humbled, that can happen. I have come to notice this in life. You can become bigger or bitter, that is what I think. And as a result of that pain, I became bigger”

This is one of those stories that will stay with me for a long time. It shared the pandemic in an interesting way, the characters had so much depth and were very relatable, and the compassion demonstrated by Lucy touched my heart deeply. I highly recommend Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Stout and read by Kimberly Farr.

Elizabeth Strout was born in Portland, Maine, and grew up in small towns in Maine and New Hampshire. From a young age she was drawn to writing things down, keeping notebooks that recorded the quotidian details of her days. She was also drawn to books, and spent hours of her youth in the local library lingering among the stacks of fiction. During the summer months of her childhood she played outdoors, either with her brother, or, more often, alone, and this is where she developed her deep and abiding love of the physical world: the seaweed covered rocks along the coast of Maine, and the woods of New Hampshire with its hidden wildflowers.

During her adolescent years, Strout continued writing avidly, having conceived of herself as a writer from early on. She read biographies of writers, and was already studying – on her own – the way American writers, in particular, told their stories. Poetry was something she read and memorized; by the age of sixteen was sending out stories to magazines. Her first story was published when she was twenty-six.

Strout attended Bates College, graduating with a degree in English in 1977. Two years later, she went to Syracuse University College of Law, where she received a law degree along with a Certificate in Gerontology. She worked briefly for Legal Services, before moving to New York City, where she became an adjunct in the English Department of Borough of Manhattan Community College. By this time she was publishing more stories in literary magazines and Redbook and Seventeen. Juggling the needs that came with raising a family and her teaching schedule, she found a few hours each day to work on her writing.
